Yesterday I mentioned there was another story to tell about the road we are on today. We are traveling I10 towards Jacksonville, FL.
We were driving the freight liner to Mississippi in October 2007 to visit Kris's mom . She had breast cancer. Every two hours we would take turns driving. We were on our last leg back to the RV when it was my turn to drive. We were about and hour from the RV and I had just passed a car and was still in the left lane when all of a sudden we heard a huge bang! The truck jerked across the right lane took me up the embankment and we were heading for the trees. I knew if I try to jerk the truck back down the embankment we would have turned over. I holler, "KRIS, what do I do". There were silence! Then I saw a hand reach across and grabbed the steering wheel and in a ever so calm voice I heard the words, "take your foot off the break". I took by foot off the brake and I noticed the wheels starting to grab. We coasted back down to the shoulder of the road and we came to a stop. I asked him how he stayed so calm and I really did appreciate the help. He said he was screaming. I knew than there were angels on that steering wheel and talking to me. The right tire blew out and left us with $8,000 dollars in damage to the nose of the truck and a paint job and lots of other stuff. The blessing is we were both fine and we were able to drive the truck home after the tire was replaced. I have thanked Kris many times for retiring from the military. The USAA insurance did not give us any hassle and all we had to pay was the deductible.
